Le Combat Spirituel (Scupoli)

It was Saint Francis de Sales' bedside book, which he became acquainted with during his studies in Padua in 1588. This book accompanied him throughout his life. He read it in its entirety every month. He even translated it into French. The Bishop of Geneva found the Combat "clear and entirely practicable." However, this quite austere book is not suitable for Christians living in the world. That is why he wrote the Introduction to the Devout Life for their benefit.

It should be noted that the 1589 edition only contains thirty-three chapters. Due to the success of the Spiritual Combat, the Theatines increased the number of chapters, so there are sixty-six in current editions. There are several French translations available, including the one by Father Lajeunie (Robert Morel publisher, 1966). He based his work on the original Venice edition.
